Working Out When Traveling
Because you really don't want to waste a year of discipline with a week of indulgence

By Courtney Krueger / www.TrainEatLive.com

Vacation! You hear this word and picture yourself relaxing on a remote beach; the scenery captivates your senses, the sun illuminates the land, and what tropical daydream would be complete without a fruity, blended cocktail in hand that holds a tiny umbrella. You never think that that drink contains 500 calories and that lying around for seven days straight would be detrimental to your fitness progress. Of course not! A thought like that would be a dark cloud raining upon your sunny fantasy. Unfortunately, if this daydream were to become a reality, that dark cloud is coming whether you like it or not. And since no one wants bad weather during a vacation, run from the rain and run fast! You must keep up with your work out regimen.even in paradise!

No matter where your travels take you, you need to keep on traveling down your fitness achievement path. I know, vacation is a deserved and well-needed time of relaxation, a time to clear your mind of the daily obligations including.the gym. However, use this as a time to get creative with your fitness, while enhancing the excitement and enjoyment of your trip. Discover unique outdoor activities and recreation that your destination provides. Maybe you can take a picturesque hike, or kayak, or swim with the dolphins.the options are endless. Also, look at your holiday as a chance to walk, whether you're walking to an island town from a resort or through a cultural European city, you'll be taking in more sights and not realize you're exercising. Many hotels offer gyms, and it wouldn't put a dent in your vacation time to spend 30-60 minutes in this convenient room. Use it as an incentive (and justification) to indulge in an "umbrella drink" later in the day. While we're on the topic of tropical delicacies, be sure to also stay on your healthy eating path, which isn't easy when surrounded by restaurants, bars, buffets, and other decadent temptations. Since it takes 3500 extra calories to gain one pound, one "cheat" day probably won't set you back on your road to results. But a week of indulgences.uh oh, here comes that black cloud! Make sure your fitness/food ratio still stacks up, and pick one guilty pleasure each day (choose wisely). While on a retreat, "treat" yourself in moderation and walk, or run, to the pina colada bar.

Okay, so what if your hotel doesn't offer a gym or recreation? What if you're on a business trip and seriously pressed for time? Then it's okay to forgo a chance to perspire, right? Don't answer that! There are several ways to still get your work out on, even in the small space of your room. Start with a circuit warm up, alternating moves like jumping jacks, marching in place, and hopping from side to side. There are many beneficial exercises that require no special equipment such as:

Squats (aka "king of exercises"): Use the wall! With your back against the wall, quickly squat up and down as low as you can go. (how many can you do in a minute?) Stick one leg in front of you for a one legged squat. (alternate sides) And don't neglect the wall sit; put your back against the wall, bend knees to a 90 degree angle, and hold, and hold, and hold.
Chair dips: Ah, that's why they put a chair in each room! While sitting, place hands on either side of hips, slightly bend your knees, and lower your body until your arms are at a 90 degree angle. Use those triceps to pull yourself up. (ouch)
Jump Lunges: Get into a lung position (one foot forward, one foot back, knees bent) and jump as high as you can while switching legs to resume a lung position. Explosive but controlled movements such as these are double threats to those travel temptations, as they provide cardio and strength training.
Plank: One of the most powerful positions for the abs! Get into a push-up position on your hands and toes (or elbows and toes), hold your abs tight, keep your back straight, and hold, and hold.that's right! There are variations to this move such as the side plank and the one legged plank.
Superman: Lay on your stomach, stretch your arms out in front and your legs straight back, lift up and.fly! (intensify this exercise by simultaneously moving your arms and legs up and down, alternating sides)
Walking Lung: Take a long stride, bend to a lung position, then raise, alternate, and repeat in a forward movement. Lung from wall to wall!

The list is endless, but you get the concept. Where there's a will to work out, there's a creative and functional way to get the job done (even while traveling for the job).

You work so hard each day to proceed on your health journey; don't let one week set you back several miles! Remember that the vacation or trip will eventually end, but your sexy body will stay with you forever. And if you keep the dark clouds away, you can show off your bikini body throughout every season. The forecast calls for sunny weather!
